Ever wish their was a help button on the computer? Consider Computer Handyman your help button.

Computer problems are frustrating - we understand that better than anyone. Sometimes these problems require professional help and sometimes they are simple do-it-yourself fixes with just a little know how. See our helpful tips below to help you rule out those simple fixes.

Everything on my computer seems to take forever.
  • Have you restarted your computer lately? Always reboot first!
  • Do you have enough hard drive space? Make sure you have at least 200-500MB of free hard disk drive space. If not, you should consider moving some of your files to an external hard drive, increasing your hard drive space or deleting unnecessary files.

From here it can get a little hairy. Bring it in and let us run a diagnostic on it for only $35.

I have "high speed internet" but it seems slow. What gives?
  • Have you restarted your browser lately? How about your computer? You might have programs running in the background you don't realize are slowing you down.
  • It's not you, it's me. Try an online speed test. Here is a great resource speedtest.net
  • Is your internet connection secure? A neighbor or passerby could be leeching off of your connection. If you don't know how to set up a secure connection, just give us a call.
  • Try re-configuring your router and modem.
  • It could be spyware or malware - run your anti-virus.
My Computer Keeps Freezing
  • Make sure it is actually freezing. Hit the NUM LOCK key and see if the light turns on/off.
  • If you determine that the computer is actually frozen, try hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL to force quit the program you are in.
  • At the risk of sounding like a broken record, restart your computer!

When to Worry

How can I tell if I have a virus?

Just because a computer is acting oddly doesn't necessarily mean a virus. Nor does a slow computer, error messages, pop-ups, data loss ... the best way to know if you have a virus is to run your virus scanner! If you can't determine the cause, or remove the virus with your scanner, please bring it in. Sometimes a panicked user can cause more damage than a virus!

I think I got the "Blue Screen of Death" but I'm not sure ...Popular Services are diagnostics and troubleshooting, tune-ups, virus, malware, spyware removal, computer upgrades, computer consulting, wireless/wired network set-up, data removal and backup, customer built computers, one on one computer training, web storage and buckup services

Do you have a blue screen with the words "fatal exception" in the error code? Yep. That's it. Don't panic - bring it in and we will get you fixed up. Blue screen of death is not always complete doom - most likely your data is recoverable and your computer can be fixed.

My computer keeps restarting on it's own, without warning.

This could be caused by anything from heat issues to hardware or software, virus or operating system issues. A diagnostic is the best way to determine the cause.

Errors: Runtime, Divide, fatal exception, general protection ...

Again, these errors do not mean you are doomed but they are serious enough to require immediate attention.
